Unicorn Thought
by Jean Haines

I wandered through the lonely wood,
Stopped for a moment; felt I should
The air was clean. The beauty bright
How this scene changed overnight

Yesterday was full of pain
I'd walked here through the dull dark rain
I'd come back on this sunny day
To wash sad memories away

I listened as I sat a while
As gentle birdsong made me smile
Slowly closed my heavy eyes
Awoke to see a strange surprise

There, right there in my full view
I could not believe; could this be true
A beauteous creature tall and white
A most incredible magic sight

A Unicorn was standing there
I couldn't touch it, would not dare
I was so in awe, knew not what to do
Should I keep this secret or tell you?

It was radiant, white and very tall
I felt humbled , tiny , lost and small
Its presence mystified my being
I could not accept what I was seeing

It seemed to give a gift to me
A wise tender sense of thought
And I just stood there in a daze
As if an answer I had sought

We stood like that locked in a gaze
My trembling hands were shaking
I knew that I was witnessing
A rare miracle in the making

Then a bright light surrounded me
And we two felt as one
We stood there close just he and I
In the misty morning sun

Our hearts beat as one together
As I sank into his embrace
I felt his tender gentle breath
Fall soft upon my face

Sweet Unicorn please tell me
What it is that I should know?
He whispered softly "Kindness,
Show it where ever you may go"

"That's all you wish to say to me
That's all that you can say?"
"Yes sweet child it's all you need
To help you on your way"

A shadow passed across my skin
I felt the creature move
A coldness came I know not from where
I was alone again

Did I dream I saw that Unicorn?
Did I really see its face?
Did I dream his words to me
As I stood here in this place?

I shook myself as from a dream
I moved as if to go
I heard his words just one more time
"Kindness where ever you go"

The wisdom of a Unicorn
Is not too hard to see
The beauty of his words are
We can do it ... you and me

So if kindness is the answer
To help make this world go round
I'll play my part, I'll pass the word
Without ever making a sound.
